Superfood of the Week: Cacao (10/12)

Cacao beans

This week, in continuing our weekly Superfood Series, we celebrate the wonders of cacao.

Derived directly from the seeds of the Theobroama cacao tree, cacao was used by ancient civilizations as a form of currency.

Early colonial records indicate how cacao was used as a medicine and acted as a carrier in the administration of other remedies in the 1500’s. The medicinal value of cacao was in its ability to treat weak patients with a variety of dis-ease. The scientific name Theobroma literally means “food of the gods” in Greek.

Among other things, cacao beans are known to contain the same chemical we produce when we fall in love. After all, it’s the bean that chocolate is made from!

Major health benefits of cacao include:

  • it supports our cardiovascular systems
  • it contains the highest antioxidant of any other food
  • it is rich in magnesium, iron, fiber
  • it balances our blood sugar
  • it helps form hemoglobin
  • it contains omega-6 fatty acids, essential oils
  • it diminishes anxiety

Try grinding up a small hand full of cacao nibs in your coffee grinder and adding to a smoothie, or using the nibs along with last week’s superfood – gogi berries – in oatmeal!

Down at Café Prana Nui, the Wow Cacao Smoothie is all about cacao!  Come on down and add a little love to your day!
