Superfood of the Week: Hemp Seeds (10/26)

To conclude Superfood Month, this week we are celebrating one of the most powerful and magical, yet small and delicate of them all: the hemp seed!

Hemp Seeds: A lot of power in a small package

Hemp seed comes from the plant Cannabis sativa and has been used by man for hundreds of years.

These tiny seeds contain all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life.

The seeds can be eaten raw, ground into a meal, sprouted, made into hemp milk, prepared as tea, and used in baking.

In addition, hemp seeds are:

  • a complete protein, high in omega-3&6
  • high in major & trace minerals

The best time to get your daily serving of hemp hearts is with your breakfast. A great way to use them is to buy the seeds in bulk (the best local deal is at Mana Foods), and then grind the seeds up in a coffee blender to make a fine powder. Use just a teaspoon of this powder in your smoothie for a potent boost – hemp seeds pack a lot of protein in their small packages!

Down at Café Prana Nui, you can enjoy hemp seeds added to any smoothie, or you can try them on a current fave: the raw vegan pie!
